Hall of Fame - Interview with Joshua Kimmich
Joshua Kimmich: "I am honored"
Since 2015, the Hall of Fame is being held at the Mercedes Benz JuniorCup, which takes place for the 28th time on the 5th and 6th of January at the Glaspalast of Sindelfingen. On the 25th anniversary, viewers and fans of the tournament had then the opportunity to choose the best eleven players and trainer from the 25 years JuniorCup history. Since then, one more member has expanded the Hall of Fame each year during the tournament. Last year it was trainer Ralf Rangnick.
On Friday, January 5, Joshua Kimmich will be accepted into the Hall of Fame. At the 2013 tournament, where Joachim Löw was a spectator at the sports hall, he was honored as the “player of the tournament.” During the interview, he talks about the Hall of Fame, the tournament, and his career.
What does it mean to you to be accepted into the JuniorCup Hall of Fame?
Kimmich: "For me, it's an honor. Especially when you realize who has played at the JuniorCup and is in the Hall of Fame. It is a great tournament, which is well known especially in this age group and internationally. But also, many great German teams are there every year, and therefore I look forward on being accepted to the Hall of Fame. "
What memories do you have of the Mercedes-Benz JuniorCup?
Kimmich: "I still have many memories. Especially the final defeat of course, I believe, it was a seven or nine meter shoot-out. The tournament was particularly very special for us young players, because it was televised at that time. We were all thrilled about it. Especially with the VfB, where the U19 is actually there every year, it is always an absolute highlight. Even as a kid, I was twice at the tournament to watch the games. That is why it was a special kind of voyaging experience at that time; unfortunately, we could not win the tournament. "
After a break of 24 years, Bayern München is now playing again. What do you think the U19 of Bavaria is capable of doing?
Kimmich: "Many things! They are the top group in the Bundesliga and doing well in the Youth League. This is why I also believe, they can show a lot in the sports hall. The boys can look forward to it; it is something special. Of course, I will cross my fingers for Bavaria. "
If you think back to your participation at the JuniorCup, could anyone have foreseen that you would be a set regular player in the national team and for Bayern München? Or was it at least a dream?
Kimmich: "It was definitely still a dream back then. It was unforeseeable and simply too far away. Quite a bit has happened since then, when I think about what occurred in these four or five years. First, of course, with the step to Leipzig and then to Bavaria. Now, to be playing in the Champions League and being in the national team is a dream come true, but back then, it was definitely not expected. "
