Mercedes-Benz JuniorCup January 5 & 6, 2019

Day 1 - Only Hertha is Already Qualified

The experts agreed that the 28th edition was one of the best of the Mercedes-Benz JuniorCup

At least on the first day. There were significantly more goals than in previous years, also more technical skills. Hertha BSC Berlin and VfB Stuttgart go into the second day of the intermediate round as the first placed groups.

The Bundesliga set the tone at the Glaspalast in Sindelfingen on the first day. Although the foreign teams of Panathinaikos Athens, Vikingur Reykjavik, or Grasshopper Club Zurich showed strong performances in between, they had no chance against the durability of the Bundesliga clubs. As a result, Hertha BSC Berlin has already qualified for the semi-finals before the last intermediate round of Group 1.

In Group 2, Bayern Munich started strong but eased down in the second round. Bayern can still qualify for the semi-finals, with a victory in the last game of the second round against the Grasshopper Club Zurich. A tie between VfB Stuttgart and Cologne would let the VfB reach the semi-finals.

However, the tournament is just a calculated exciting affair. The only team that has been already eliminated is Vikingur Reykjavik; all other seven teams still have the chance to reach the semi-finals.

The tournament starts on Saturday, January 6, at 11am. The final will be ticked off at 4pm. Tickets are still available at the box office.
